My Funny Valentine
Rollstone Studios presents a new free exhibition, “My Funny Valentine,” featuring heart- and valentine-shaped art pieces.
The exhibition opens on First Thursday, today and will be up through the end of the month with a free concert by jazz guitarist/songwriter Jeff Healey from 6 to 8 p.m.
“I asked our resident and consignment artists to create a work of art that uses a valentine shape,” explains resident artist Sally Cragin, who is coordinating the event. “I got the idea because my brother Hal Cragin, a musician, was Iggy Pop’s bass player for many years, and during that time convinced Iggy to record some standards, including “My Funny Valentine.” Iggy’s rendition (which is not yet released) is theatrical and winning, but completely different from his other work. In a similar vein, to use a cardiac pun, I love the idea of non-standard valentines on display at our studio. We will also have Valentine-themed handmade items for sale.”
One artist, Reverend Blamo of Fitchburg will be showing two pieces which are part of a series. “Together they are called “She loves me, She loves me not.”
One piece, “Heart-board” depicts a dart board altered into the shape of a heart; the other, “Heart-ware” is a heart and arrow constructed out of steel rebar, pliers and wrenches. “These both demonstrate my thoughts on relationships I have had - the contrasts of good and bad aspects of love. The “bad” is designed to be interactive, as people can throw darts into the heart if they like.”
