Contain Yourself

Rollstone Studios presents Contain Yourself! a unique exhibition of Boxes, Bowls, Handbags and more opening on First Thursday, November 5 from 5 to 8 pm. “Once human beings stood upright and began a tradition of hunting, every single culture needed to contrive containers to hold an ever-expanding collection of stuff,” explains exhibition curator Sally Cragin, a resident artist at the Studios.

“This exhibition celebrates the idea of containers, ancient and modern, kitschy and cute, elegant and serene. We invited area artists to submit objects with this theme. Visitors will see antique items such as incised gourds from New Guinea, and wooden glove and hat boxes decorated with wood-burned designs, improvised containers made of plastic, nylon, masking tape and other substances, and functional pieces made of ceramic, glass, metal and other durable material.”

Artists include: Reverend Blamo, Sally Cragin, Lolita Demers, Betsy Dionne, Anne Giancola, Joan Sinatra Hathaway, Ema Kilroy, Therese Martin, Jana Morgan, Camilo Neves, Helen Obermeyer Simmons, Jeffu Warmouth.

There will be a one-day workshop on making a handbag out of upholstery samples on Saturday, November 28 from 12:30 to 3:30 pm, $5 suggested donation covers class and all materials, scholarship money available. Open to all ages, children must be accompanied by parents. Register by calling 978 348 ART1 or email sallycragin@comcast.net
