ROLLSTONE STUDIOS OFFERS FREE WOOL SPINNING DEMONSTRATION WITH
CHILDREN’S AUTHOR EMILY CHETKOWSKI
* * * FREE CONCERT TO FOLLOW
FITCHBURG - Rollstone Studios presents two FREE events on Thursday,
March 5, 4:30 to 6 pm for children, families and music lovers. Noted
area children’s book author Emily Chetkowski will present a wool
spinning demonstration and will read from her book, “Amasa Walker’s
Splendid Garment.” There will also be a free concert that afternoon.
Chetkowski learned to spin in the 1990s, and usually uses sheep wool,
but she has also incorporated angora bunny fur and hair from her
poodle mix, Charlie, who will accompany Chetkowski for the
demonstration. “Since it’s March, the traditional month for
sheep-shearing, we’ll also talk about my Amasa Walker book.
This story was inspired by a speech given by Brookfield native
Walker, an active Abolitionist who was a founder of Oberlin College.
He spoke about acquiring a coat in 1811, a process that included
spinning wool, weaving cloth, and hand-tailoring the ’splendid
garment.’
Her demonstration will be followed by free live music by pianist and harpsichordist Brenda Caldwell.
